Seven sacraments, and the practical steps

Sacraments

If you are not sure where to start, telephone the office and say so — our staff will put you with the right person. Nobody here expects you to know the procedure.

Baptism

Second Sunday
of the month, 1 pm

Children are normally baptised on the second Sunday of the month. Parents attend one preparation session beforehand in the parish rectory.

Bring the child's birth certificate. At least one godparent must be a confirmed practicing Catholic over sixteen. Adults seeking baptism should inquire about O.C.I.A.

Reconciliation

Weekly & by
appointment

No appointment, no form, and nothing to prepare. There is a confessional at the back of the church and a reconciliation room beside it if you would rather sit face to face.

If it has been a long time — years, or decades — say that at the start and the priest will walk you through it. A priest will also hear confessions after any scheduled Mass.

First Communion

Second grade up
Register in September

Preparation runs from October to the spring through our religious education classes. First Holy Communion is celebrated during Eastertide.

Religious Education Office ·

Confirmation

Eighth grade
Spring celebrations

A period of spiritual preparation including service projects, retreats, and study of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Conferred by the bishop or pastor.

Adults who were baptised Catholic but never confirmed are confirmed at the Easter Vigil — speak to a priest directly.

Marriage

Six months' notice
at least

Contact the parish office before reserving any reception venue — diocesan policy requires at least six months between initial inquiry and the ceremony.

Pre-Cana marriage preparation is completed with our pastoral team. Nuptial Masses are traditionally celebrated on Saturdays.

Anointing of the Sick

At any hour
Call rectory

Before surgery, during advanced illness, or in danger of death. Do not wait until a person is unconscious — the sacrament offers healing grace and strength.

Holy Communion is brought to the sick and homebound regularly. In emergencies, call the rectory directly.

Becoming Catholic

O.C.I.A. Sessions
From autumn to Easter

For anyone unbaptised, baptised in another Christian tradition, or seeking full initiation into the Catholic Church.

You may come and listen for as long as you like before deciding anything. Reception takes place at the Easter Vigil.

Funerals

Contact the office
Before undertaker

Telephone the parish office first if possible. Our clergy will assist your family in choosing readings, music, and arranging the Mass of Christian Burial.

Vigil prayers may be held the evening prior, followed by the funeral Mass and committal prayers at the cemetery.
